Dr. Kumar Named Chair of Tulane SPHTM’s Dept. of Tropical Medicine
Dr. Nirbhay Kumar has been selected as the new chair of the department of tropical medicine at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, effective January 2010. He replaces acting chair Dr. Richard Oberhelman.
Dr. Kumar is currently a professor in the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute. He received his MSc in biochemistry from the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and his PhD in biochemistry from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
Dr. Kumar’s major research focus is the development of a human malaria transmission-blocking vaccine. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007.
