Chilean School of Public Health Provides Earthquake Relief, Requests Assistance
The consequences of the earthquake that hit Chile last February have been severe, and many people are still without services such as electricity, water and sanitation. Additionally, many communities are unable to access emergency healthcare, and the arrival of winter will bring challenges for the many that are left homeless. The School of Public Health at the University of Chile has been taking steps to help support individuals and the community in their recovery.
The faculty, students and employees at the Chilean School of Public Health have been providing assistance to the families and communities affected by the earthquake. They also expect to be involved in mid- and long-term plans by assisting in trainings, researching and documenting lessons learned, evaluating response capabilities, making proposals for health policies related to emergency preparedness and responses and conducting disaster-related epidemiologic studies.
The dean of the School of Public Health has written a letter, sent by the school’s coordinator of international relations, asking for assistance in their efforts. Several faculty from ASPH-member schools of public health have already been involved with the School, and more may be interested in offering assistance.
