ASTMH Call for Award Nominations—Various Deadlines

The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) will present several honors this year at the society's 58th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.  Nominations can be submitted online at www.astmh.org/source/award/index.cfm.  The online application site will open the week of May 4.

For most awards, application materials include a letter of nomination (approximately 3,500 character limit) and the nominee's curriculum vitae.  Please collect these items prior to submitting online nominations.

The awards follow:

  • Bailey K. Ashford Medal
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, June 3
    For distinguished work in tropical medicine. Customarily it is given to an individual in mid-career (within twenty years of PhD or MD). 

  • Donald MacKay Medal
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, June 3
    For outstanding work in tropical health, especially relating to improvements in the health of rural or urban workers in the tropics. 

  • Joseph Augustin LePrince Medal
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, June 3
    In recognition of outstanding work in the field of malariology. 

  • Dalrymple/Young Award
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, July 1
    Presented to a mid-career investigator who has made outstanding contributions to arbovirology.  This award is administered by the American Committee on Arthropod-borne Viruses (ACAV).  A list of previous Dalrymple/Young Award recipients can be found here.  

  • Richard M. Taylor Award
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, July 1
    Presented to a person who has made outstanding contributions to arbovirology throughout his or her career.  This award is administered by the American Committee on Arthropod-borne Viruses (ACAV).  A list of previous Taylor Award recipients can be found here.  

  • Harry Hoogstraal Medal
    Nomination deadline: Wednesday, June 3
    The American Committee of Medical Entomology (ACME) Executive Council requests nominations for the 2009 Hoogstraal Medal.   The award, which honors the contributions of Harry Hoogstraal, is given to those who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and lifelong service in the field of medical entomology.   Any living medical entomologist that is not currently serving on the ACME executive council is eligible for nomination.  Self-nominations will not be accepted.  Nominees not selected in previous years may be submitted again.  The ACME executive council will review the nominations and select a recipient for the medal to be awarded at the 2009 ASTMH meeting.  A list of previous Hoogstraal awardees can be found here.  

  • Communications Award
    Nomination deadline: Saturday, August 1
    The Communications Award recognizes exceptional achievement in tropical medicine journalism with the potential to educate readers and inform public policy regarding diseases and health conditions specific to poor and underserved populations. This award honors an individual author (or authors contributing to a body of work) as opposed to an employer, publisher or institution. Eligible entries will include feature-length newspaper articles, magazine articles or series.  Full-length books, book chapters, articles published solely online and broadcast journalism will not be considered at this time.  Original research or technical reports, newsletter articles and promotional copy are not eligible for the award.  Download application guidelines at www.astmh.org/awards/comm.cfm
