CDC’s 2008 BRFSS Data Report

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recently announced the release of the 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data, just four months after the end of data collection.

The 2008 BRFSS state-by-state data charts are located at http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/brfss.  The web site has state specific data on such health topics as binge drinking, asthma, hypertension, disability, obesity, physical activity, smoking, health care coverage and much more.

The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, many CDC programs and states rely on BRFSS data to plan, manage and evaluate state-based chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs.

The BRFSS is a unique, state-based multi-mode survey system active in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.  Information on health risk behaviors, clinical preventive health practices, and health care access, primarily related to chronic disease, is obtained from a representative sample of non-institutionalized adults, 18 years and older, in each state.  The BRFSS provides flexible, timely and ongoing data collection that allows for state-to-state and state-to-nation comparisons.  State-specific data, including racial-and-ethnic-specific data from the BRFSS, provide a sound basis for developing and evaluating public health programs.
